Paper Flowers – 3D Flowers and Leaves

The first type of flower I am going to tackle is just the simple 3D flower.  I am going to make them from felt and cardstock.  These are easy to make and a good starter on 3D flowers.  You can also see how to do rolled flowers too.

These flowers have 6 different parts in the download file.  Use them alone as in the felt flower above, use the same type  (one big,one small) as in the third image or use two different types (one big, one small) as in the first two examples.  You can attach leaves or not.  The leaves are in a separate file.

What you will need:
          • cardstock scraps
          • liquid glue or glue gun
          • small brads for centers of flowers
          • or small paper shapes for center of flowers
          • Download File
Cutting the Flower

The flowers can be cut from any color or patterned cardstock.  In a future lesson I will cut flowers from patterned paper.  Your imagination is your only limit.

The parts of the flower can be cut on one mat.

If you want to cut the flower out of felt or fabric and you have a maker use the rotary wheel.

If you don’t have a maker, it is a little harder.  I tried using fusible material and haven’t made it work yet but I’m still trying. What I did do to get the felt cut was first use the deep cut blade and then attach the felt to contact paper. I used Duck Brand contact paper.  Place the felt on your mat with the contact paper down and cut on the felt fused setting.  Tape the whole piece down to the mat with painters tape.  The cricut cuts the design twice.  It cuts it well if it isn’t to intricate of a cut.

The little half circles on the flowers are the glue points.  Glue them to the back of the rest of the flower making the flower curve inward.  I tried several types of glue.  Liquid glue works fine but you have to hold the flower together until the glue dries enough to hold.  Tape runner glue failed miserably.  You can sew the felt flower together, but glue gun is the only way to glue the felt.  Glue gun works on the paper too, but of course, you generate “strings”

Hold the flowers together with brads or glue a small decoration in the center and glue the flowers together.  It is up to you.  You can also attach leaves if you like.

Be sure to stay with this series all week and see the wreath I make with all my flowers.

I have made a page with all the links to the paper flower tutorials.  The tutorials for the other paper and felt flowers can be found here.
