This Gatefold Cut Out Sympathy Card is elegant. We all are going to need sympathy cards at one time in our lives. I went looking for some and found only a few. So I made a couple. This is the simpler one where the word folds over in front.
It is almost a typical double gatefold card but with the word Sympathy cut out of the top fold. I saw this done with dies on HSN craft Day by Sara of Crafters Companion. The other version of this technique, where halves of the word in the front interlocks with each other holding the card closed is here.

Paper Selection
I did this card in black and grey. It seemed appropriate to the Sympathy Card. You can choose any color you want. The base card needs to be two sided because you do see a little of both sides, but not much. Subtle patterns would work well with any part of this card as long as the pen showed up. Just don’t use too many patterns. This would get confusing.
Cutting the card
Cut the Gatefold Cut Out card base and the Cricut will do the writing. I used a black gel pen. Did you know that you can use any pen in your Cricut? You can see the trick here. I used a font called AR Decode and you can get it free at FontZone.com.
The “Sympathy” is very thin and barely connected to the card so be careful when removing it from the mat.
Assembling the Gatefold Cut Out Sympathy Card
First re-crease all the folds. There is no score line for the “Sympathy” pieces. Just fold them back where they connect to the card.
Then glue all the embellishments together and glue them to the card. It is fairly simple to place everything where it belongs. Just make sure you glue the background on the right side of the letters. Fold the card to make sure. Follow the pictures if you have questions.
And your gatefold cut out sympathy card is done. It fits in an A2 envelope for mailing.
The other sympathy card looks like this and can be found here.
