Make A Special Curved Gatefold Birthday Card

This curved gatefold birthday card has a special twist on normal gatefold cards.  The front flaps are curved instead if straight.   It is the first in my series of birthday cards. I tend to use a lot of birthday cards because my family now expects a custom homemade card.

A card band would help to keep this card closed.  Instead of including one I thought I would let you create your own.  There is more information on card bands here.  This card is 6 X 4.25 which fits into an A6 envelope or you can make your own envelope with or without a custom liner using the envelope tutorial.

You will need:

        • Heavy cardstock for the base
        • Various Cardstock scraps
        • Pen
        • Glue (They only ship from Spring thru Fall)
        • Download File
Paper Selection For the Curved Gatefold Birthday Card
The weight of the paper isn’t important since you have two layers.  The main paper (orange) does have to be two sided because you see the edge on both sides. You could use a patterned paper for any part.  If you use pattern paper for the inside base card make sure you choose a pen that shows up.  The decorations look great cut from glitter or foil paper.

Cutting the Curved Gatefold Birthday Card

Cut the card base and the cricut will do the writing.  I used a blue pen.  Did you know that you can use any pen in your cricut?  You can see the trick here.

If you are using the SVG file, make sure you follow the instructions in the document file included in the zip file to make sure your project is the right size and folds properly.

I got a little carried away with the decorations because I couldn’t make up my mind between foil and glitter paper.  In the end I just used all of them.  If you want to do that just cut the decorations again with different paper.

There are lots of tiny pieces with this card.  Make sure you keep track of them.  I have a mini basket that I keep on my table for just that purpose.  I have spent a lot of hours looking for little parts of various projects on the carpeted floor!

Assembling the Curved Gatefold Birthday Card

Glue the inside layer to the base card (the bigger one without writing) making sure to center it inside the main base card and line up the fold lines.    Fold the card a few times to loosen it up and make sure it folds.  Then close the card and glue the two front overlays to the front of the card.

Then. attach the big cake to the inside center section of the card and the decorations randomly around the front and inside of the card.  As I said before, I couldn’t decide whether to use glitter or foil for the decorations so I cut them both ways and still couldn’t decide so I used all of them that I could fit on the card!

And your Curved Gatefold Birthday card is done.  It fits in an A6 envelope for mailing.  But be aware once your family member receives a homemade card, they are going to expect one every year!
