Make This Cut Out Birthday Card

This cut out birthday card was inspired by watching Crafters Companion on HSN.  They have a whole line of cards cut this way with dies.  I designed this one to be cut on the Cricut.  I love this idea so much that I already designed others with other words cut out, coming soon.  The cut out word birthday allows you to see through to the decoration on the inside.

This is the May 2021 Patreon Card for The Crazy Cricut Lady.  The tutorial is free but to download the design you will need to first become a patreon supporter of The Crazy Cricut Lady site.  This is completely separate from my site membership and does cost $1 per month.  That helps me keep the rest of this site free and allows me to help pay for the site.  One project per month is posted on my patreon site but you get access to all past projects when you join and help support this site.  Consider joining my patreon supporters now.

You will need:
Paper Selection

The base card of this cut out Birthday card needs to be heavier paper (110 lb. wt or heavier.) and two sided.  The rest of the card can be any weight and doesn’t have to be two sided.   Use whatever paper you want!   For the balloons I used glitter paper and foiled paper, whatever was in my scraps box.  Use your imagination and your scrap box.  I know you have one!

Cutting the Cut Out Birthday Card

Cut the card base and the Cricut will do the writing.  I used a blue gel pen.  Did you know that you can use any pen in your Cricut?  You can see the trick here.  I used a font called Crosaline for the writing and the cut out. You can download it for free at DaFont.

The lettering on the front is cut out and the lettering is thin so be careful taking it off the mat.

The triangles and balloons are laid out weird by Cricut and can be combined to save paper and time.  If you need to know how to do that, watch my video that explains how.

Assembling the Cut Out Birthday Card
First, as always, re crease the center fold.  Make sure you do this carefully so that the cut outs line up properly.  Then, glue the light blue square onto the inside of the card centered.  Next, place the light purple piece with confetti inside the card but don’t glue it yet.  First, line it up with the opening on the front so that it appears behind the word birthday and reaches from side to side.  Then glue it down.
Next, assemble the balloons and attach them to the triangle without writing.  Look at the pictures if you have any questions.  Attach the triangle with the balloons below the cut out birthday and the triangle with Happy above the cut out.

Finally, attach the light purple letters over the letters on the base card, shifted slightly so that you can see the edge of the letters below creating a shadow effect.

And your Cut Out Birthday card is done!  And remember, it fits in an A7 envelope for mailing or if you want a better fit you can make your own envelope using the tutorial here.
